Millenium Girl: Buddha Pose 1999
This is the piece that began my work on the theme of the Millennium. It was exhibited at
Consolidated Works
January, 2000, part of a group show entitled "Do Not Touch" curated by Meg Schiffer.

This is a meditative piece, good for stressed out people! But it requires patience. The intention of the piece was t o capture the essence of the turning of the Millennium. Created in January, 1999, t is quite in contrast to the feelings of many people about what was to come in the future: the apprehension, the fears, and the sheer lunacy that we have all forgotten, now that we have Windows 2000, and the great death to machines calamity did not occur.

Demonstrating the Buddha potential of people outside of "the box" and gently testing the patience of the viewer in this hyper-fast media driven world were a couple intentions of this piece. In addtion, I wanted todemonstrate the interconnectiveness of the technologies and global symbols, which are increasingly becoming understood in this media. It was shot in Paris, Tokyo, Seattle, and Varanasi, India. Some of the main symbols in this piece: Tokyo Tower, The Eiffel Tower, The Space Needle, The Buddha, a woman sitting in the Lotus position instead of a man, The Ganges River, the passing of time (the date 1999 appears in day-glow on New Years Eve at a party at Groovetech, an internet broadcast station shows up for two seconds), the countdown of time on
the Eiffel Tower with the lights J-399 avant l'an 2000 (day 399 before the year 2000), a television, and the 360 degree rotation of the color wheel on the main image during the first four minutes of the piece . The main content of the piece is a washed out woman sitting in lotus position meditating next to a television which is projecting images and essentially light from the Ganges River, in Varanasi, India, The beloved name of this city in India is Kashi which means city of light, in India, it is the most spiritual place of this great spiritual land.

After about 4 minutes of gentle music there is a transition, and with this transition is the appearnce of Tokyo Tower, the Eiffel Tower with the lights J-399 avant l'an 2000 (day 399 before the year 2000), and the Space Needle exploding for New Years 1999.

It goes on to be a watercolor like painting to dreamy music to the explosions of with a combination of these three symbols of outward expansion and elecricity in the post-modern era of connectivity. Tokyo, Seattle, & Paris are representing modern cities of creation both past and present., and then the flowing.

Hopefully this little explanation helps interpretation of this piece, as Regina Hackett the Seattle Post Intelligencer said of it, "The patient will be rewarded."

Consolidated Works was a groundbreaking space in Seattle. When I went to the first show, I was like WOW! It reminded me of New York, something like DIA or something of the sort. I feel honored to have shown here and would love to again someday. Keep up the great work Meg, Matthew, and everyone else involved!

Opening night with a new friend.
